About Me

Hi and welcome to my blog! Here's a little background about me: I was born in Miami, Fl in the 60's-yep, hippies and communes were part of our neighborhood. I graduated from a public high school and headed to Florida State University to study Criminology in the 80's. (Yes, Miami Vice was a huge influence). Upon graduation I worked for a while at the State Attorney's Office in both the juvenile and domestic crime units. I met my husband while taking Metrorail (No, I can't make this stuff up). We married in the early nineties and a year and a half later we had our first child Sara. Fifteen months later, Daniel was born, then another 23 months and Emily arrived. We stayed in Miami until we got sick and tired of hurricanes and taxes, so we moved. We choose Middle Tennessee to be our home in 2007. Before that I'd never seen the leaves change colors or snow!!

As for the kiddos-both Daniel and Emily have disabilities. They don't have a syndrome, or fall in a spectrum, they don't have any physical signs to show they are disabled, but they are. Both have IQ's in the 50's as well as Apraxia (speech impairment). If there's such as thing as being an outcast in one's own outcast society then they fit in it. Anyhow, they are the angels I have been blessed to Mother. Because of their amazing teachers in Pre-K, I decided I needed to change my career and get my Masters in special education. So, off I went! Many, many years fast forward and Daniel is 20 and Emily 18 now. They have both graduated with a special education diploma and are learning job skills in our local high school. As for big sister Sara, she's a senior in college and will graduate with a degree in International Studies--we're all so proud!!!!

In order to try to stay grounded and because we had NO money for therapy, I picked up quilting when D & E were little.  My grandmother had taught me when I visited her in Collins, MS (where I learned to cane pole fish and all roads were gravel) during the summers as a little girl. And I knew this would be what I needed.  Where else can you rip something up and put it back together and create something totally new and original? I quilted for several years when they were little, then stopped when I returned to working full time (Special ed. teacher). I recently (two years ago) started again and I just love the new direction quilting has taken. I keep pushing myself to try challenging techniques.

Another struggle in my life has been my weight. I've tried just about every program out there and recently lost over 45 pounds, but once again have managed to put quite a bit back on. I can't seem to find the balance of real food and exercise. I know it's a daily decision that I have to make. Maybe this blog will help to hold me accountable???

So, what you'll find here is: a real, full time working, trying to be creative, quilting, weight struggling, Goodwill hunting, flea market decorating, Pintrest addict mom.

I can't wait to share some of my crazy adventures with ya'll.

Teresa
